Do I Ever Turn the TV Off?!?

Lindsay Duke
November 4th, 2008--My Journey Through Television...

It was most definitely another typical day for me television wise. I usually come back from my classes just in time for my favorite soap opera, General Hospital, to begin. This I always watch with great interest (as much interest as anyone can have for a soap opera). I heard a lot of college kids get addicted to soaps...That seems to be the case with me. I never miss an episode no matter how boring or strange it is. After General Hospital is over I usually switch the station over to My KTOV and leave the television on while I surf online or take a nap. Maury, Jerry Springer, King of the Hill and Reno 911 all come on this station. I wouldn't call this an active television watching period 100% of the time. Sometimes I actually do sit down and watch these shows, but for the most part I use them as background noise. While they are on I'm napping or doing homework, occasionally laughing at something stupid I see on Maury (you are NOT the father!).

After those shows are over the channel becomes pretty useless to me so I turn it over to A&E. A&E has different types of programs on during the week ranging from The First 48 to Dog the Bounty Hunter to Intervention. I will leave that on for the rest of the evening until I (usually) switch over to either Comedy Central or Adult Swim in time for various programs. Because last night was the election, I opted to watch the political coverage of Headline News on CNN and then tuned in for Indecision '08 for a humorous treat regarding the election starring Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. If those two are involved, I'm watching it. Most nights end switching back and forth between A&E and Adult Swim (where I tune in for episodes of Family Guy). I stay up pretty late and often see reruns of the same programs. This is a pretty typical process for me.

The only other place I watch television is on SurfTheChannel where I can see episodes of Dexter online. I don't have Showtime so that little gem of a website really comes in handy for a college kid with no connections to premium channels. I pretty much stick to my own routine and rarely watch TV with others, mainly because my roommates come and go at all hours. No one is necessarily around to watch television with, at least not on my schedule.

It was really odd documenting my television watching. I realized how long I actually have the television on. However, I really don't actively watch a lot. I guess I use it as background noise. At the same time, I don't want just ANY background noise. I'll turn the channel when shows I deem boring are on. I guess I want to be able to casually follow a show while I'm online or working on homework. A lot of people like to work in silence but I have to have some sort of distraction. So, I guess that I technically have the television on pretty much all day unless I'm sleeping or at school.

I don't know how accurate keeping tabs of your television habits is to be honest. As I was writing things down, I found myself refraining from changing the channel because I hadn't been watching it for 15 minutes but I'd already written it down, so I didn't feel like erasing and changing my log. I found that I technically have the television on A LOT...but I'm really only watching 2-4 shows with interest depending on my mood, and one of those I don't even watch on television. Is this a reliable way to track what people watch? Well, it seems to be a really good attempt to do so. I was honest on my journal and noted when I wasn't paying attention to the show. However, the hassle of noting all the small details of what I was doing made me change my normal pattern of occasional channel surfing. I wonder how many other people really take the time to be truthful on these journals if they have to pay that close attention to what they are doing. Then there were times I wondered "Am I really paying attention to this? Should I even note it?". It's a very odd process in general.

After doing this journal, I really hope the television waves don't give me some sort of horrible tumor in 40 years or so...I don't think Maury is worth it. Then again, it would be REALLY quiet in my room and I'd probably fail a few classes because the silence distracted me from schoolwork.

Mad TV clips

I found this on Youtube.com, It aired originally on Mad TV and it is a political campaign parody that would have aired during the primaries.

Barack Obama: He Completes Us

This is from The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. It aired during the week of the Democratic National Convention on 28 August 2008. The fact that they used "Circle of Life" from The Lion King, which to me is the greatest movie ever, made it awesome. I do like how EPIC this sounds.

SAW V

2. SAW V is the fifth horror/thriller movie in the series. It is mostly advertised by its predecessors and its own ongoing shock value. The producers obviously did their homework when choosing a release date so close to halloween. This is sure to boost sales in that many people will probably chose to see a scary movie over any other genre when going to the movies around this time. Both the official trailer and one of the official posters have the same instance of horror highlighting the audience's attention. That of a man whose head is in a street lantern, with the man still alive. The other poster is that of John Kramer played by the actor Tobin Bell, with a mask of himself. After the first four saw movies, the actor Tobin Bell has received the notoriety of being highlighted on one of the official movie posters as "the star that sells the show." The promotion continues with such clips from the movie as: SAW V: movie clip

After four movies, it is no longer Darren Lynn Bousman that will be directing this thrill, but David Hackl, the production designer of SAWs II, III, and IV and second-unit director for III and IV. As the series gets more and more widespread its audience becomes not merely interested in the horror, shock, and thrill, but the notoriety itself becomes reason enough to become a part of the following.

4. The website for Saw V is pretty interesting. The website offers viewers information about the movie including a synopsis and cast bios. It also contains videos, a photo gallery and many downloads. The website also offers links to more information about the four previous saw films. It breaks the films down into categories, and illustrates the gory details of how the victims is the film were killed. Though gruesome, the layout is truly high-tech and graphically dazzling. The style is flashy and keeps the viewer interested in each aspect of the website.

5. We found may other websites devoted to this new film including:

6. As a group we visited a few websites includingsurfthechannel.com and watchtvsitcoms.com but where unsccessful in finding any pirated versions of Saw V. However it is extremly easy to find pirated versions of the other four Saw films.

Quantum of Solace

Scott Tindall

Cassie Trevino

Quantum of Solace is to be released November 14th and continues the high octane adventures of James Bond from the Casino Royale film. Daniel Craig returns to the role of the oo7 agent. Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. In a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper, 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists and even M, to unravel Greene's sinister plan and stop his organisation.
The classic theme of sex, mystery, and action is relevant in the posters as well ast the trailer where the sexy, action packed scenes are played out enticing both men and women. The film is based on 1960 short story written by Ian Fleming, it is produced by Michael Wilson, and is directed by Marc Forestor.

The official web site is http://www.0007.com/ . The interactive website includes downloads, five different videogames, the offical music video, a gallery of photos.

For a link to a pirated version we found a forum that listed the following link: http://english.galatta.com/entertainment/preview/english/previewnews.asp?n=1221
The official trailer for the film:

Corgi International Limited wil release five inch action figures and gadgets including a voice-activated briefcase, as well as their traditional die-cast toy vehicles. Penguin Books has published a compilation of Fleming's short stories entitled Quantum of Solace: The Complete James Bond Short Stories, that was released in the United Kingdom in May 2008.

Gametrailers.com have shown the first gameplay footage from Playstation's up and coming game Quantum of Solace which is based on the two 007 titles 'Casino Royale' and 'Quantum of Solace'. 007: Quantum of Solace is expected to be released later this year.

The clip below gives an inside look into the 007:Quantum Solace Game.

The Haunting of Molly Hartley

"In this tale of spell binding suspense, something evil lurks just beneath the lush surfaces of teenaged girl's private school world - and it holds the rights to her very soul. Now, on the eve of her 18th birthday, Molly Hartley is about to discover the truth of just who, or rather what, it... "

Travis Harr
Andreya Hernandez
Mashari Hogan
Alyse Hutchins

Viewing the poster for the film we see a girl standing in front of a cross filled with five of the other main characters of the movie. With the title centered, the poster is pretty limiting in what it offers as far as plot description. One could say that the cross implies a religious demonic attribute. All the names of the stars are lined atop. The trailer on the other hand gives us a much better view of the true horrific nature of this film. Quick editing with an interesting plot line involving a girl selling her soul to the devil, as well as suspenseful scenes, attracted our eyes and interests in viewing this film. We agreed the posters simplicity would not have brought us to go out and view the flick. Both the trailer and the poster have very dark themes and this is an attractive quality to horror film enthusiasts.

The official site for the movies is http://www.thehauntingofmollyhartley.com/. This sight is very spooky: creepy music playing in the background, dark, smoky. It is very interactive, with various animations and movies, and good graphics. The website is easy to navigate. It begins with a clip of the trailer. Then the viewer can read a detailed synopsis of the movie, check out the cast and information on them, look at the photo gallery, read what the press has had to say, download things such as wallpaper and screensavers, and even buy tickets to the movie. The website definitely conveys the overall ambiance of the movie and promotes the cast of young upcoming actors and actresses to a younger audience.

Since The Haunting of Molly Hartley hasn't actually come out yet, there aren't very many additional sites on it. MTV has a page on its website that features a trailer for the movie and place where people can comment it. It also has a place where people can rate the trailer, giving it a thumbs up or thumbs down. Comingsoon.net also has a page where people can watch the trailer and leave comments. But so far, no real fan sites have been created.

Unfortunately we were not able to find any pirated of the movie, but found many websites that did have movies available for watching that have recently have come out in theatres. Www.surfthechannel.net provides different television show that you are able to review and comment on. Www.watch-movies.net provides numerous amounts of movies to choose from; ranging from new to old, western to comedy, etc. With this website one is able to vote on the movie whether the quality is good or not and a user is able to view with percentage and a thumbs up thumbs down if the movie is worth your time. Other sites that we found that were we able to view illegal movies were www.watchtvsitcoms.com and www.bittorrent.net.

ROLE MODELS

Liz Lackey, Yannis Koutroupis,

Marielle Knemoeller, and Alex Jimenez

2. The movie poster and trailer seem to both emphasize the same aspects of the movie: that the two stars of the movie, Paul Rudd and Sean William Scott, are not suitable mentors for children. The actors’ characters, Danny (Rudd) and Wheeler (Scott) have been sentenced to community service for causing problems on the job, and for destruction of school property. Director David Wain is targeting audiences of this movie by advertising it in both trailer and poster, as a comedy. The poster for this movie shows the main characters doing things not befitting of mentors. Rudd is pictured as though he was urinating on a wall, and Scott is shown drinking what seems to be alcohol. Neither character seems to be the type of people normally chosen as a role model for young children. The poster and the trailer, for the most part apply the same approach for luring in an audience: the comedic approach.

3/4?. The website for the movie "the role model" has a very interesting anddetailed site. It has a intro w ebsite where you can watch a trailer and a restricted trailer. Then you can click on another link which will take you to where you can see the actual site. This one allows you to see movie clips, pictures, and play games. They also have a link for a community out reach program call sturdy wings. This is a organization that is used in the movie and it has an actual link connected with the movie. They also have a outline of what the film is about, its basically a verbal trailer of the film.
http://www.rolemodelsmovie.com/site.html

5. The movie Role Models with Sean William Scott and Paul Rudd is using the same promotional technique that a lot of movies do. Posters, movie trailers, and an official website are really the extent of what I was able to find at this point promoting the movie, although that could change as we get closer to the November 7th release date. On the imdb.com Role Model’s page there is a news section that links to anything and everything involving the movie, including reviews from movieblog.ugo.com and cinematical.com. Their official site, www.rolemodelsmovie.com, is probably their best promotional tool right now. At the site they have a unique memory game that you can play along with a mock website for their “big brother and sister” organization Sturdy Wings. While spending some time at MTV.com I noticed that there is some information about the movie on the site, including movie trailers and some things with the stars of the movie.

6. When we first met, our assumptions that it would not yet be available on websites to view full because it has yet to be released. There may be files online that can be pulled to download for the more "experienced pirates", but nothing viewable yet. We did find a lot of discussion boards were people were wanting to know if the movie had been posted anywhere, but no answers. The follow are links to websites we searched for the movie Role Models, but to no avail: http://www14.alluc.org/alluc/ & http://surfthechannel.com/

W.

Madeline Schmidt
Lindsay Rogowicz
Samuel Rhotenberry
Josh Sanchez

The film, W., opened in theaters on October 17, 2008. The film came in at #4 behind Max Payne, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and the Secret Life of Bees. The movie is a somewhat biographical depiction of the story behind our current president. The movie posters emphasize Josh Brolin, as he is the only actor billed on the top of the poster. Also, the multiple posters with varied expressions hint to the viewer that the film will cover all the sides of George W. Bush. The image selected for the poster also uses Brolin's likeness of the president to attract viewers. In contrast, the trailer for the film emphasizes the many characters in the film. Some featured in the trailer are Rove, the Vice President, Laura Bush, and George Bush Sr. Also, the trailer mentions that the film is directed by Oliver Stone, which gives the view the impression that the film will be controversial like many of Stone's previous films. However, once again, Josh Brolin is the only actor credited.
The trailer and movie poster seem to be fairly representative of one another. The film seems to be marketed to a liberal audience craving an explanation for Bush's actions. It is depicted as a biography, and gives the illusion that it features real life footage by omitting critical acclaim or press reviews. Also, when the actors are shown they are credited with their character names. Contrary to its liberal theme, the poster does provide a clue that the movie will be somewhat sympathetic to Bush with the tagline, "A life misunderestimated." Although, by using "misunderestimated" Stone still shows that the film will somewhat poke fun at Bush.

The official site for film features a large image of Josh Brolin as W in the center of the page. Some of the features include the trailer, an about the film section, photo gallery, cast and crew links, downloads featuring wallpapers, a film guide, a mash-up contest, and a widget. I found the most interesting part of the site to be the film guide. The provided a list of the scenes in the film with explanations of their origin. For instance, they would either provide links to the actual quotes used for the film or an explanation as to why the author took the liberty to create the scene from his imagination.
Another neat aspect of the official site was the video mash-up contest. Participants could create a mash-up trailer for the film and post it to the site to be viewed. One winner that is selected will win a MAC PRO, Final Cut Express, and a video camera. I thought this was a great way to get people involved in the film.

While I could not find any fan sites or merchandise for sale, I did find a review of the film from the San Francisco Chronicle. Also, the film attracted some heated debates amongst the members of the IMDB. The threads on this site include of variety of topics including questions about the film and full out political debates.

There does seem to be websites where you can download the full movie for free to watch online. However, I was not actually able to watch them from my computer. I also checked other sites that were recommended for watching movies online, and they did not have W. available. These sites included alluc.org and watch-movies.net. I suspect that in the next couple of weeks, many more bootleg copies will be available as it is now released in theaters.

The Secret Life of Bees

Deeadra Piper, Hillary Reyna, Shelby Reilly, Liz Perez

The Secret Life of Bees, which premiered on 10/17/08 is a drama based on the 2002 New York Times best-selling novel of the same title by Sue Monk Kidd.  The film grabbed the #3 spot at the box office behind Max Payne and Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

While the basis on the book is noted by both the trailer and the poster, the main emphasis or selling point is the "all-star cast" of the film.  Starring in this movie are Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson, Academy Award nominees Queen Latifah and Sophie Okonedo, eleven time Grammy winner Alicia Keys, and beloved child star Dakota Fanning.

The genre of Bees is a mix of intense and heartwarming dramas with the classic love story intertwined.  Because of this, the target audience could be anyone who likes serious drama, but the cast of the film along with the romance may attract mostly female viewers.

The trailer gives us a lot more insight on the actual storyline-a significant difference from the poster, which only shows a picture of the cast that hints toward separate lives that come together for a common cause.  There was only one version of each.

At the official site for Bees, the trailer is played against a backdrop of the main residence in the film.  After the trailer ends, viewers have the options to look at photos (including recent ones from the L.A. and D.C. premieres); read cast information; download buddy icons, wallpapers, and bookmarks; watch video clips; get recipes from The Secret Life of Bees Cookbook (that will be available for purchase soon), and even get a Facebook application that allows you to send gifts from the movie to your friends.  Since the site belongs to Fox Searchlight Pictures, there are links to other films being released by the same company.

One piece of extra information found on the film was an interview of Kidd, the original author, by the Dallas Morning News.  She was interviewed one day after the film's release and although skeptical at first, she is thoroughly satisfied with the turnout of the finished product.  Upon finding out that her novel would be put on film, Kidd was asked who her lead character should be and she instantly named Queen Latifah.  Another interesting thing is that Dakota Fanning had been a fan of the book for the last four years and, upon hearing that it would become a film, she wrote to Kidd and begged to be given the role.

Another cool thing is a spread in the November 2008 issue of Sophisticate's Black Hair magazine that concentrates  on the hairstyles of the African-American women of Bees and how they came to be.  I was especially grateful for this article, which stopped me from screaming, "Oh my God!  Alicia Keys cut her hair!" (It's a wig).

There are supposedly pirated copies of the movie online.  The first attempt at finding one was with fulldls.com, a site that claimed to have a copy.  After downloading and leeching the torrent file with Transmission, the finished product wasn't readable or watchable.  The next attempt was from Extra Torrent, but the download never began after a whole day of waiting.  There are some people online who claim to have gotten a copy of the film, but we weren't so fortunate.

All in all, we're pretty much sold on the cast, storyline, and the overall feel of the movie and think that it would be a great film to go and see.

Pride and Glory

A blog brought to you by: Sarah Marbach, Melinda Lopez, Sarah Liu,and
Nick Lepf

"The last thing you want to uncover...is the truth--Truth. Honor. Loyalty. Family. What are you willing to sacrifice?"

Question 2:
The trailer for Pride and Glory offers the promise of a great blockbuster. The official trailer can be viewed at prideandglorymovie.com. The story is projected through the acting of popular actors such as the sensational Colin Ferrell (SWAT, Miami Vice, and The Recruit), Edward Norton as the eclectic rouge with a extrospective disposition (Red Dragon, American History X and Fight Club), and Jon Voight as the token authoritative father figure (Holes, National Treasure, and Transformers)--he is even referred to as "pop" in the film. The film is supplemented with a host of various other actors and actresses; many of which have been involved in law enforcement focused films such as John Ortiz (Law and Order, CSI, and Miami Vice), Noah Emmerich (Cop Land, Law and Order and Frequency), Frank Grillo (CSI, Blind Justice and The District), Lake Bell (Boston Legal and The Practice), and other lesser known actors who are not common household names. Pride and Glory is a crime-investigative-drama directed by Gavin O'Connor. The film was written by Joe Carnahan (screenplay), and Gavin O'Connor; also, Robert Hopes wrote the storyline.
Pride and Glory centers upon a closely knit pack of nepotistic multigenerational Irish American families of New York City Police who are forced to reckon with the evils of New York City, only the evils are within their own pride (family group). Families’ moral fibers are overtly questioned in the trailer. Edward Norton is part of the family and is charged with finding the perpetrators of the murder of several fellow policemen--the trailer clearly alludes to the notion that the killings are part of an iniquitous scandal involving the families themselves. Certain lines of dialogue are highlighted with text passing on the screen:
"truth, lies, loyalty, betrayal, [and] right [or] wrong...[w]e
sold out shields [badges] to highest bidder...[w]hen
the line is drawn where will you stand."

Question 4:
Pride and Glory’s official site is prideandglorymovie.com filled with several sections to explore once one enters the site. The site consists of synopsis, a trailer, a cast and crew list, a gallery, and a downloadable section. The Cast and Crew section gives a list of the characters in the film and gives a background on what other films they have been in and career highlights including nominations and accolades. This section lets readers know what upcoming films the actor or actress will be featured in the future, as well as offers a more personal information. The gallery proffers a photo album which illustrates who each character is, and provides in-depth material on the plotline. The Washington Heights Photo Essay section gives descriptions and provides a display of the behind the scenes and making of the film including pictures from the area the film was directed.
The Badge section gives a history of the NYPD badge. The badge is considered a symbol of pride and glory for all those who carry it and serve under it. The title of the film is synonymous with the connotation of the NYPD’s badge. Additionally, there is a section where you can download wallpapers, screen savers, and AIM icons excerpted from the film for personal entertainment.

Question 5:
The film scored a 3.0 out of 5.0 on google's rating system. Further, a review with a seemingly objective standpoint still asserts some inimical qualities: Pride and Glory Review. Additional material that enhances the promotion of the film include: Youtube, and Google video which provides many subsequent interview clips. Ebay profiteers are selling pre-exposition paraphernalia such as posters and magnets. Best Buy is also selling the soundtrack (available on October 21st).

Question 6:
We were able to locate over 25 bit torrents as full featured prereleases. There are further, many listings within programs that utilize peer-to-peer capabilities such as Limewire.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year

Joy Cervantes
Enjoli Claire
Kelsey Cooper
Brittany De Clercq

As we searched the internet for anything and everything HSM, we really only found one promotional poster and one official trailer of
High School Musical 3: Senior Year. On the poster, the characters are dressed in formal, prom-like attire with their caps and gowns on over it. Although their names aren't posted, there is nothing in the background to distract your eyes from what they obviously want you to focus on: the stars of the film. Disney has done such a great job promoting the first two straight-to-DVD films because this is the first one being released in the theaters and everyone already knows who they are. The trailer and the poster both seem to target the same audience: tweens and teens. It is made obvious in the poster and in the trailer that the movie is a musical about a group of friends and their senior year of high school.

The
High School Muscical 3: Senior Year's official website is an exciting and interactive spot to be. When you first enter the website, you are greeted by the trailer for the film. As you continue to browse the site, you are also given the opportunity to receive a free iTunes download if you purchase tickets to the show online. There is also a place to meet the cast. The coolest feature, however, is the area where you have access to downloadables to plan the perfect HSM3 screening party. This site offers so much to see and do. Check it out for yourself!

The merchandise and fan sites for HSM are infinite. At the official website there is a link that takes you to The World of High School Musical. Here you can play and buy games, buy the movies, soundtracks, and Karaoke CDs, as well as shop for clothing and accessories. They have thought of everything! Pajamas, t-shirts, costumes, jeans, jackets, removable skins for electronics, hats, water bottles, bags, key chains, and so on. As far as fan sites, there are tons. Here are a couple of the best we've seen.
HSMusical.org has so much information and a plethora of photos on the site, it's almost like the girl who runs it works on the set. Also, High School Musical Status Quo has an abundance of information from the past two films, descriptions of the characters in the films, as well as biographies of the stars. There are lots more out there, including other amazing websites and videos on YouTube.

We found two websites that have pirated movies. Torrentdownloads.net
did not have High School Musical 3: Senior Year available, and Piratebay.com required membership and $0.99/month for access, so we weren't able to see if the movie was there or not.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Cheryl Temple & Monica Tame

2.) The trailer and movie poster for Zack and Miri Make a Porno are similar in their approaches to selling the movie. The main elements emphasized are the stars, Seth Rogen(Pineapple Express, Superbad, Knocked Up) and Elizabeth Banks (Definitely Maybe, 40 Year old Virgin). As you can see, both their names are highlighted on the poster, and, in the trailer, their names are the only ones specifically mentioned. The genre is emphasized as well. By using the word "porno" in the title of the movie, fans can expect a comedy with crude sexual content. The simplicity of the movie poster relates to some of Rogen's other films that contain a more "everyday human life"-type humor in them, while the trailer touches on the romantic side with the relationship between Rogen and Banks. Fans of director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma, Mallrats) are targeted somewhat in the trailer with the brief appearance of Jason Mewes (Jay and Silent Bob Srike Back, Clerks) and the Star Wars reference (Star Whores).

3.) Zack and Miri's site contains a red band trailer for the movie that viewers who are 18 or older may enjoy. Toward the bottom of the homepage, there's a link to the making of Zack and Miri Make a Porno. There is also an about production link that talks about how Kevin Smith wrote the story with Seth Rogen in mind as Zack. The photo gallery also contains movie stills and production photos. Links to Myspace and Facebook are also provided.

4.) There's been quite a bit of controversy surrounding Zack and Miri. Most of it deals with the fact that the word "porno" is included in the title. An article by Josh Tyler at cinemablend.com talks about how Fox Sports dropped commercials for the movie, as well as how the choice to keep the word "porno" in the title may benefit Kevin Smith in the longrun. We also just recently saw a commercial for the film that showed the title being just Zack and Miri, and excluding the latter part of the title. Also, the movie poster shown above was not the original poster. The first poster that was to be used is shown on the right. An article about the ban of this poster in the U.S. accompanied this image that we found. Also, at zack and miri's website, there is a halloween costume that's easy enough to make just by cutting along the dotted lines.

5.) We have only heard of one site where people can get pirated versions of movies, t.v. shows, etc. Unfortunately, Zack and Miri Make a Porno is not on the list. : (

ABOUT THE BLOG
