Hulu & You Tube

When we first visited the Hulu website we were in awe. Everything was so organized and well put it was super easy to find what we were looking for. We visited the most popular section of the sight to choose something to watch and about 20 different episodes popped up that were only popular today, the sight also had a link for most popular a month ago, this week, and all of the time. We chose to watch Family Guy which seemed pretty popular and the quality of the video was absolutely amazing. We did not realize that you could receive quality of a video like this on the internet. The ads weren't minded at all, just short little tid bits about certain things and then right back to your viewing of the episode. While viewing the episode, Hulu provided endless amounts of episodes of Family Guy that one may want to watch and the same videos that are popular today.

Now moving along to a we did a search for full episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Unfortunately we came up short. Because anyone can post items on youtube.com, there is an abundance of…well, hilarious crap. There were tons of episode clips, spoofs, and promotions, but no full episodes. We chose a clip posted by a random fan—Ikujinonai—that was just an advertisement for Sunny made by the studio. The fan titled it “Friends” and it is a spoof on the hit show Friends, obviously. There were 74 comments on this clip. Most of them expressing their love for Sunny and there bet that Sunny would have kicked Friends’ butt had it continued to air more than three seasons. It took us a while to find a good clip. Searching for something specific would be like trying to find a needle in a hay stack. The clip was able to be projected at full screen, but at very low quality—kind of like getting a crappy pirated movie that is just a taped version of the theater showing..then you see a guy get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the movie and walk in front of the camera. Youtube.com may be a wonderful resource for many things, but full episodes of television shows isn’t one of them.

Hulu seems as if it is a very sucessfull sight, but YouTube we feel as if brings more of a custom be yourself kind of approach, YouTube one can upload anything they feel in which a person looking for something like that can search and find it and maybe find other things as well. Hulu providing such great quality and full episodes is an extremly helpfull. We feel as if YouTube should stay the same but maybe with a bit more organization that Hulu aquires.

1. I chose to watch Episode 6 of Season 5
, "Rise Up", of Grey's Anatomy on Hulu. They have episodes 3-6 of the current season posted in the "Full-Length" Type. The link for the episode takes you directly to ABC video-player that is also offered on the ABC website. There are ads that run before the episode begins and there are five, thirty second commercials that run in between. I did not watch the episode in HD; however, it is an option for a couple shows like The Office. I was unable to embed the full-length episode into the blog due to the fact that it is copyrighted by ABC. Hulu.com offers clips from every episode of Grey's on the website but those are also copyrighted by ABC and are unavailable to embed.

2. Though YouTube wants a higher income, especially with its numerous numbers of monthly visitors, and major companies want to protect their own interests by screening their material put on youtube, making
youtube.com a competitive source to hulu.com is stretching youtube perhaps further than it should possibly go. Hulu provides viewers with a variety of tvshows and other company made programing, a venue that youtube is not known for or majorly used for. With youtube's format it is also more difficult to find company programs because of the wide and varied ray of video's that youtube provides, leaving both the provider and the audience less than satisfied. Hulu is very useful; specifically designed for this venue it has clear organization and allows viewers quick access to desired shows. However, youtube still has a larger audience, but this stems from not only programed shows, but the various and unsusspected videos. Therefore adding this feature to youtube will not really have too much affect on the hulu/youtube competition. People will still go to hulu for shows and youtube for everything else.

3. As I searched through
youtube.com I realized it was extremely hard to find current complete episodes from the ABC network. This is probably due to the copyright infringements affiliated with posts that go up unauthorized. I found a clip from last sundays episode of Desperate Housewives. The clip is only the first seven minutes into the show. The first thing I noticed from the clip is the bold sentence that is displayed on top of the screen for the duration of the clip. It reads, "full episodes @ www.tvthrone.com." I also noticed the clip is posted by a fan. The clip is displayed in the upper left hand corner of the screen, with links of other related episodes on the right side. This is unlike hulu.com who presents their clips almost in a theater like fashion.

We chose to watch 30 Rock on hulu.com. Hulu only has the past five episodes of 30 Rock, but has many clips from past seasons. It also has a lot of clips that are supplemental to the show; it has interviews with cast and crew as well as "webisodes" featuring Kenneth "The Paige". The show's main page contains five subsections: clips, full episodes, details about the show such as a description and cast information, discussions, and user reviews. At the bottom of the page, there is a section of "Shows You Might Enjoy." For this program, the site recommends "Arrested Development", "Saturday Night Live", "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", "The Office", and "The Daily Show". Hulu offers quite a few options to share the program. It has a share feature where you can send a link to the episode to someone via e-mail or instant message. One of my favorite features is the embedding feature in which you can embed the video on nearly any website. The best quality of embedding on hulu is that you can choose a specific time frame from the clip to embed. There are also options to view the program in full-screen or high resolution. The site is very clean looking and almost free of ads. Their main source of advertising is commercials during breaks in the episodes. In a typical 30 minute show, there are about three or four advertisements.

We couldn't find complete episodes of any television program on YouTube. There were, however, many episodes of various shows broken into a few separate clips. We chose to watch episode one of the new US remake of Kath & Kim. It was in three parts, and the first segment didn't even start until the mid-opening credits. The program is presented on a pretty organized page with "related videos" to the right and "user comments" below. There is a share option in which you can send the video to someone or embed it on almost any other site. The comments section contains an area where users can post "video responses" to the clip. The "related videos" section contains 20 videos that are somehow related to the clip. The only advertisements are the ones that pop up on the lower side of the screen during the video. The three clips that form a nearly-complete episode were posted by a user named "michelle1111101". That is obviously not a network's username.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both sites. Hulu is much more organized than YouTube is. Hulu promotes mostly full episodes of television shows and full movies. Hulu is updated very frequently. For instance, a show that premiers on a Thursday night is usually on the site by Friday morning. A good quality of YouTube is that users can submit their own videos, while Hulu's videos are updated by networks and distributors. Hopefully YouTube won't become another Hulu. They both have distinct features that are unique to other sites.

When we arrived at the Hulu, the very first show that we saw happened to be FOX's Family Guy. It was being advertised at the top of the website, extremely larger than other hyperlinks for shows. The clip that was picked to advertise Family Guy was a clip of Peter, the father, apparently shouting at his wife Louis. The episode that we watched was very funny. It almost seemed like they should have advertised this episode of Family Guy a little more. They do, however, have a vast amount of clips and full episodes of Family Guy at the bottom of the episode that we watched. There is a list of episodes, according to season, and there is another list consisting of clips from past episodes of Family Guy. As the mouse clicker comes in contact with the title of each episode or clip, a box pops up next to the mouse with a picture of said clip, the title of the clip, and also a brief summary about the clip or episode. We thought this was a very cool feature that Hulu has added to its arsenal. The only ad that we saw on the site was for whatnow.com. It was located in the top right corner of the Hulu page. We thought that there would be many more ads than this on the Hulu site. There is a very active discussion board at the bottom of the page. There are certain conversations that go on for hours. There is an option on the left side of the episode that will let a viewer e-mail the episode to as many friends as desired. You can even dim the lights of the page that are located behind the clip or you can bring the episode up on full screen, both options are given. There is also an icon, which if clicked on, will allow you to watch the episode in high resolution. There is even an embed feature. In our opinion, this site in one of the best, if not the best, when it comes to watching television on the Internet.

It took a little more searching on YouTube to find what we needed. We searched for the same episode that we watched on Hulu, but all we could find was either clips from said episode or pieces of the episode cut up into three or four parts. Seeing that we are all very use to the YouTube format, there was nothing on the site that really grabbed our eyes. When it came to ads on the other hand, YouTube had ads for Target, Amazon and also Yahoo shopping. The clips of Family Guy did not seem to be very reliable. When we clicked on a few of them, there would be a completely different clip from some other show that would come up. Most of the posts on YouTube tend to come from random fans on the Internet. Not very many of these clops seem to come from a "reliable" source.

Hulu has a very strong advantage over YouTube if you only count television clips. Hulu is a very advanced television viewing website, that much is clear. But when it comes to current clips, whether it be from must see TV, the news networks, or home video YouTube had the upper hand. Other than YouTube changing its websites format, much like Facebook did, we do not expect that it will have to make any drastic changes in the manner in which it presents information.

Hulu vs. Youtube

If we type lipstick jungle which aired on NBC in Hulu, it will shows us three options that we want to see, such as the “Show” which is the links all about Lipstick Jungle. Second option is “Type” that include two options for us to choose either we want to watch the complete episodes or the clips. The last option is “Source” has all the links about the show or the other news whatever relate to this show. The most part I like most is Hulu also gives all the links about this show, such as list of episodes and list of clips and it clearly shows which episodes they have and so on. Under the episode Hulu separate two parts for viewers, one is discussion and one is User Reviews. People can create a topic in the discussion area to talk about whatever they thought about this show, and users give their comments in the “user review”. Also, on the top of the page it has 5 stars to let everyone to rate this show “hate it” or “like it”.

This clip of Ugly Betty, aired on ABC, was posted by http://www.xtreamvidz.com/. It has been viewed by 1,895 people and in 8 minutes and 58 seconds. The episode stars Lindsey Lohan and a guest, where she is in completion for a lead position between her and Betty. They are teaming up for a project for the magazine they work for. Lohan plays dirty, trying to gain a higher position for the project. Betty and her colleagues then try to plan and sabotage Lohan so Betty will be the head of the project.

hulu has television shows and older movies that you can view on the site your not able to look up random things or see current movies like what utube has to offer. I feel that if youtube becomes more like hulu it would not be a good thing why would you want two sites that are alike. they are both different sites and should stay that way because they both offer a different variety of things to watch

1. On Hulu.com, we picked the most recent episode of Family Guy which had links to the previous episodes below the screen. On the viewing page, you have the option to watch the video in 480p resolution, change the lighting, and watch the episode in full screen mode. The website does allow user comments and also shows commercials during the show. We find that Hulu.com is much more organized than YouTube, and we like that it shows the whole episode, instead of annoying 15 minute clips. The quality of the sound and picture is also much better. Here is the Family Guy episode we watched

2. From YouTube.com we found clips of an episode of The Big Bang Theory from season 2, originally shown on CBS. The episode was split up into 4 clips, so if you wanted to watch it all, you could. At the top of the clips, it says, "Full Episodes @ www.TvThrone.com." There isn't a distinction between the different types of videos on YouTube like TV shows, music videos, and random home-made videos. These clips of The Big Bang Theory were posted by a fan, not the network so it is possible that this is an illegal posting.

3. As we explored both YouTube.com and Hulu.com we found a few advantages and disadvantages in both worth noting. The advantage of Hulu.com is being able to see a variety of complete television shows and movies at any time from NBC, FOX, and a few other companies with less advertising than you'd have to sit through if you were to watch them on TV. The disadvantage of Hulu.com is that it does not appeal to people who are looking for a wide range of random videos that some people are interested in when they log on to YouTube.com. As a YouTube.com member, you are able to upload and share as many videos as you'd like. If you are not an actual member you are still able to watch the random posts by YouTube account members as well as clips from TV shows, movies, and commercials. However, the disadvantage when compared to Hulu.com is that it is very rare to find entire episodes and/or movies without having to find them in pieces like we did with The Big Bang Theory.

When first arriving at Hulu.com, the initial reaction that most have is “wow”; this site is exceptionally unlike what many of us are used to. The site is very organized and up to date. There are ten different episodes that one could choose from when first getting to the site, each episode is presented by a slide show that shows the name of the show and a brief description of what episode is available.
When finally deciding which show to watch, the site then presents a page similar to the first. There are links to other clips and episodes, many of these are clips and episodes from the show that you are presently watching, such as the most watched and a list of all available episodes that the site provides. Down below the video being played is a list of comments from various users. When you first start the video there is an ad at the beginning. While watching the movie, there are commercial breaks for advertisements. All of the advertisements are national and not local. You are given various options such as watching the show in High Resolution, Full screen, with lower lights and the ability to embed. Also given, are user reviews and recommended shows.

When looking on YouTube for a complete episode of a television show we found only clips from various seasons of that particular one. While watching the short clipWhen looking on YouTube for a complete episode of a television show we found only clips from various seasons of that particular one. While watching the short clip http://www.youtube.com/user/OnlineFringeEpisodes comes up on the screen giving this website to view full episodes of the show. Also available is the option to share the clip with others and save as a favorite. Statistics and Data is an option provided which gives information containing when the clip was add, who added it, comments and ratings. Having seen and compared sites, several advantages and disadvantages have arisen. Hulu has many advantages towards YouTube. Hulu has the ability to play whole episodes of a show and relay it in high resolution. There are also other clips to chose from giving the user a variety of other episodes just like that one or chose from numerous others. The overall format of the site is very up to date and organized giving the user an easy and pleasant experience. There are some disadvantages that Hulu has, one is the fact that users have to sit through advertisements where as when watching YouTube, there are no ads. YouTube does have that advantage that there are still more viewers visiting there site rather than Hulu.
YouTube becoming more like Hulu would be a good thing in the fact they would still be overall the most watched and visited online site of its kind. It would mean having to take a chance a hoping that users will like what they see.

1. On Hulu.com we found that it offers the whole episodes and other suggestions for shows you might like underneath the clips. We saw that you can also choose whether to watch just a clip of a full episode. Underneath along with the other shows are other episodes from the same series and lists the show details beneath that. Every spot where you can tell there was a commercial break, they only put one commercial in the spot. The commercials are short ten second clips, rather than having long commercials we typically see on television.
We saw that you can turn the clips full screen or soften the light given off by the site so its completely dark. Also anybody can comment on the clips and episodes and read the other users comments. Hulu does have hi resolution options available for watching the clips. The website allows you to embed and share the episode and clips with others if chosen too go with that option.

Hulu is well put together website, which is highly organized and is to find things. Columns seperate everything so you can find things much easier. It is very simple to find what you are looking for and just from what we saw it looks like everything posted is done by the network.

2. We couldn't find any full length episodes on YouTube, but we could find previews of shows like House and Prison Break on the FOX channel. So it was very difficult for all of us to find a full length episode on YouTube. The only time we noticed to watching a full length episode was when a user posted it in clips. You can piece it all together with the clips for in all to watch a full length episode. When we looked up a Simpsons episode, it was by users but the one we happened to watch was done by a user namedHuluDOTcom. We went to his profile and it was pretty much a giant advertisement forHulu.com. YouTube is pretty much a fan based website, where fans put up clips of anything and everything they want.

They do not post ads during the clips but the site does have ads around the clips. You can post comments at the bottom and they have similiar clips they suggest along the right side of the screen. We noticed that on YouTube you can change the size of the clip you are watching and share it with somebody. Other than that you can rate it right along with commenting on the clip watched.

We found that YouTube is very cluttered and disorganized. If you type something in the search engine, you come up with a list of items. Other than that everything is so scattered and looks like there wasn't much time and effort put into organizing this website.

3. We found hulu to be a better site for tv shows and full length episodes. Hulu is more well put together and organized than YouTube is. However, Hulu's downfall is that it does not allow users to post clips of their own.

If you like previews and funny homemade videos, then YouTube is the site to be visiting. YouTube could stand becoming more like hulu if they could somehow get more tv shows on the their site. As we said before, YouTube is definetaly a fan site and place to be if your a fan. YouTube on the other hand is very unorganized which can turn networks away. YouTube becoming more like Hulu is definately a good thing for YouTube because they can make more money and fans can watch full length episodes. This could become a bad thing as well because viewers won't be able to post the videos that fans highly enjoy doing so much.

hulu vs. youtube

Never having really visited this site before, our group was very impressed with how well the site is organized and how easy is it to work. Hulu has all of the episodes available right in front of your eyes, with all of the channels available at the bottom of the page. The main page of the site has very little to no advertisements which is very nice, but there is an ad when you choose an episode to watch, it is about the first thirty seconds show and then it is over, and you are on to watch your chosen show. For every show there is an option to post reviews, or to start discussions but they are only in tabs, so if you do not want to see them, you do not have to. When you are watching your chosen show or movie there is a list of videos at the bottom of the page that are the most popular and also shows that can possibly relate to the show that you are currently watching. Also for every show or movie you choose you watch, you have the options to make the screen, full screen and also even change it to high resolution and one of the coolest options is to "lower lights" where the site dims everything else besides your video so it is easier to see. also they do give you the option to embed the chip to a blog or website if you choose to. The presentation of this site as a whole is very sophisticated and easy to work. It is much more enjoyable to use, for the small amount of advertisement's and how easy it is to move and find the show you want to watch.

As well known as YouTube is and with the high possibility that the majority of people in this nation have heard about their site, or have visited it, you would think that they would have it organized in a better manner. Now mind you that YouTube is very easy to use, you simply type in what you want to watch and see what comes up. Not only in YouTube for TV shows and movies like hulu is but it is loaded with home videos, music videos, clips from TV shows and pretty much anything that can be shot with a video camera. On the main page of YouTube there are a plethora of videos all over the place, which is just confusing to the viewer and too much to take in. The only advertisements on the home page are advertisements for YouTube and things that they are offering. Trying to find a complete episode on YouTube is very difficult though. There are many videos on YouTube that give you step by step instructions to other websites where you can watch full episodes, but we could not locate any on the actual YouTube website. There are clips though that are available but we did not see any over ten minutes long, and all of them were posted by random people or fans of the chosen show or movie. We did happen to find a clip from the Greys Anatomy episode that aired last night.

Overall, after viewing both of these websites, there are clear advantages and disadvantages of both. With Hulu it is clearly more organized and straight to the point for you to view full episodes of your favorite television shows or even view a full movie. YouTube does not easily offer these options but it is user friendly in the fact that anyone can join and add videos of whatever they want, and it is also fun for those of who are bored and simply want to watch some hilarious home videos. YouTube becoming more like hulu could be a good thing, to have access to full episodes and such but hopefully with this happening it will not take away from the other benefits of YouTube but help make it more organized and have more of a variety which could be a clear disadvantage of the change in YouTube.

Differences between Hulu and YouTube

Lindsey Rogowicz
Josh Sanchez
Monica Tame
Cheryl Temple

1. When Hulu's homepage first appears on the screen, it was very easy to find my way around and choose the feature that we needed to view our T.V show. After typing in our desired program, it redirected us to a by a page that had a large amount of options to choose from. There were multiple episodes to choose from; you could choose to watch the episodes at full length or find certain clips. After finding and clicking on the episode that you want to watch, it opens a seperate window strictly designed for the feature you are about to watch. The feature window includes many options surrounding the screen. The options include embedding the video, sharing the episode, the details of the episode such as original air date, list of characters/guest stars etc. And, for more aesthetic purposes, it allows you the options to watch it in full screen, to lower the lighting or the choice to watch the episode in high-resolution.
An immediate difference I saw from YouTube was before you pressed play, it would prompt you with the choice to watch sponsored commercial at the beginning of the show, or watch the show with regular commercial breaks, just like you would view it on T.V. They obviously are showing that the content is paid for.

  • Unfortunately I can not make the same claim for YouTube.

2. When arriving at YouTube's home page, you are provided several options in order to find your desired media. You can choose from their feature videos, as well as most popular or most watched videos, and even videos that people are watching right now. There is, of course, a search field to enter text to help narrow your search or to find a specific item. We were looking for Desperate Housewives which airs every Sunday at 8pm on ABC. We were given many choices of episodes to choose from. However, none of the episodes listed were at full length. They are given in parts, such as part 1, part 2, part 3; each are about seven minutes each.

After you press play, the video stays on the same page, surrounded by a large screen full of text. This is unlike Hulu's nice organized screen that opens in a new window to view. Also unlike Hulu, YouTube shows no type of advertising or commercial what so ever during the program. The only type of advertising on the page is through icons that play more as a branding tactic. (Those being the Google icon at the bottom of the screen, and the Facebook and MySpace "share" icons )While watching the show, the only options available are to increase the volume or watch the video in full screen. However, most of the shows that you watch from a network such as ABC are a video of someone recording the show on their television making the quality of picture is very poor.

As mentioned before, the video box is surrounded by options on what to do with the media. You can view commentary on the episode as well as statistics and data of the number viewers, such as ratings, the countries it's most popular in, how many views it has recieved and so forth. It allows you to embed the video, share with a friend, view your personal playlist, and flag the video. There is also a list of other Desperate Housewives episodes on the right hand side. Since the episode that we chose was Part 1 of episode seven, it gave me the other clips from that particular episode 7 I was watching. This particular video was posted from another website called www.TvThrone.com. During the episodes there is a header saying "Full episodes at tvthrone.com, in order to try and direct traffic to their site through YouTube.

3. After looking at both of the sites, there are several key differences that makes Hulu a better site for viewing of a network broadcasted programming at length. Although YouTube does provide the diversity to provide anything and everything you could imagine, the quality the tv episodes are shown have very poor resolution, The screen surrounding the video box is very cluttered and distracting making your viewing not anywhere as pleasurable as Hulu. It is relatively difficult sometimes to find a particular episode and not all shows list in parts 1,2,3 like the video we chose. Some are just 7 minute clips randomly selected and posted.
Hulu may not have as much of the amateur/comedic content YouTube has, but it has organization and presentability. It is user friendly and you can find almost any episode of a national network sitcom.
YouTube needs to work on its visual presentation as well as pay attention to its copyright infringement in order to stay alive with Hulu nipping at it's heels.

Hulu VS. Youtube tonight on RAW

1. One thing we noticed is that the sound and picture quality on Hulu is much better than Youtube. However, it is frustrating to not be able to load a video all the way before watching it. The episodes are presented in list form and to find a show you can search in the search bar and also browse through all the titles on in alphabetical order in their television show. It looks professional and it is user friendly because everything is in order and you can browse by category as well as browse by genre and network. The site is cleaner and the ads are streamlined into the episodes and act like commercial breaks. Also there are fan favorite clips from the show and you can look for the most viewed content. In this sense viewers are still able to participate and important.

2. So we noticed that there are a lot of clips on youtube but not full episodes. We searched for several shows that we knew were floating around on youtube but it seems that they have been removed and replaced with clips from Hulu and KLTV.com which is interesting that these sites would post to a competitor to get advertising for themselves. However, we did find that robot chicken is being posted by fans on Youtube and a lot of the clips are edited so that the viewer can post what they want. They are also void of certain sound quality and picture clarity.

3. Hulu seems to have a more organized and less chaotic layout the site is also cleaner and ad friendly. It makes it easier for the viewer to find what they are looking for. The site also will redirect you to other sites with the video content you are looking for if you type what you want in the search bar. This feature is an advantage because it utilizes the same techniques that has made google so popular and allows hulu to become a hub for videos. Youtube is full of viral videos and unless you have an account it is cluttered and annoying. Hulu also sends notifications to users about their favorite shows and series and when new videos are up. Both sites you can subscribe to your favorite videos whish is helpful. Youtube would be at aqn advantage to clean up its site but I think that users have grown accustom to the way things are presented on youtube and it might drive users away to change the fundamental site operations.

Hulu vs Youtube

Katie McDonough

1. The show we chose to watch was Family Guy. Hulu.com showed the episode as if you were watching tv. The picture was clear and limited commercial breaks. Commercials were shorter than what is shown on tv. You could also rate the commercials on whether you liked or dislike them. There were ads of the commercials surrounding the video. You could control the video options such as pausing, fast-forwarding, etc. unlike regular tv. There were user reviews of the episodes and links to other episodes. Hulu gives you the options of embedding the video, watching it in high resolution, share it with friends, watch it full screen, etc.

2. We could not find complete episodes of any show on Youtube.com, but we did find clips and segments of an episode of One Tree Hill. The show was not very clear. The video had bad quality. It was posted by a fan of the episode, not by the network itself.

3. Hulu is a lot more organized and has much better picture quality in its videos. It offers full episodes and more options for the viewer when watching these episodes. Youtube, however, has a broader range of videos and clips with more versatility. If youtube were to become more like hulu, it would be a cleaner, more organized site with a lot more options than hulu. The bad part about it is that youtube became successful because of its individuality and its focus on the fans of the site. So it would be almost as if youtube was "selling out" to become more like hulu. Either way, we feel as though youtube wins!

Megan McDougall logged TV viewing 11/5/08

For the most part the day was pretty typical except for watching TV on Wednesday night. There really isn't anything on usually but I had to find something this time. I usually either turn on VH1 in the mornings to listen to music when im getting ready if I don't feel like messing with my computer yet. I always try to watch the O.C. and usally am able to about three or four days a week. Every show I watched I had seen before. I didn't record any shows. I either knew what I was wanting to watch at a particular time or I looked at the TV guide when I was watching TV at an unusual time for me to be viewing.

I did watch an episode of Greys Anatomy on ABC.com and watched a pre recorded show, Richard Pryor Now and Then at my friends apartment on his DVR. I watched the episode of Greys anatomy alone but the stand up with two friends. My roommate was watching Drumline with me when I was logging for the evening hours.

I didn't really think too much of having to record all the shows a watched on television on one day. It made me realize I didnt watch very much TV. I didn't ever change the channels during my different viewing hours because our remote was stolen awhile back and we have yet to get another one. If people are truely honest and can keep track all the time of what they are watching I feel that these journals are a reliable way of finding out what and when people are watching TV. They do this because they show exactly when people watch what shows and how it was viewed and by who in the household.

MY TV DAY

Mashari Hogan 11/3/2008

Today was a quite interesting in which I watched way more TV than usual, I don’t know if it had anything to do with me being a procrastinator in moving or just because of this assignment ( I definitely think it was the procrastination.) In the midst of things I had my eyes glued to Trading Spouses on CMT, it was some sort of marathon I’m guessing because it definitely caused me not to get my work done. Each episode is about two hours long so I feel as if they know exactly how to tie you in. After my wile with Trading Spouses I switched over to the Discovery Channel and watched The Haunting which is usually a everyday occurrence. My friend and I usually meet up with each other and watch it together for some sort of reason, it’s not even that interesting. I do wish I could get more of Oprah in my week, I’m always so sad I miss her now that I don’t have DVR anymore.
I’m not a huge computer person so I really don’t know how to watch shows online, but I would really love for someone to teach me. Every Monday night my friend and I get together to watch True Blood and Entourage on HBO that he recorded the night before so I did count that as something I watched with a friend and their house. As for my home, I would have to say everything is usually watched alone except for The Haunting, but that is usually done over the phone.
Keeping track of the TV show wasn’t too hard I guess, every once in a while I will switch the channel but usually I am fixated with what I’m watching. In logging I did find that I watch way more TV than I thought. I always feel like I don’t watch a lot but it is because I only watch one show for a long time and that’s where it gets me. I like the amount of television I watch, I think its not too much not too less, the healthy amount. There are a ton of TV shows people speak of that I totally wish I could catch a hold of but I usually don’t know the channel or time they come on so I miss it. Journals are interesting, if you think of it in a kind of perspective it kind of tells someone what kind of person you are in what you watch and when you watch it.

Unfortunately, I do not get to watch very much television. Normally I record my favorite shows, catch the news at ten, and watch the late night shows once the kids are put to bed. My life is very hectic and television just doesn't seem to fit in throughout the week. Needless to say the amount of television I watched yesterday was more than my usual amount of television programming. I normally don't sit and watch over six hours of television. As I have a busy household, I was multitasking as I was watching. One show that I watched that is definitely one of my regulars and that I rarely miss is Gary Unmarried. It is one of my favorites, probably because it reminds me of my life and is completely hilarious. One of the shows that I saw that I have never seen before was Dirty Sexy Money. It was alright, but I expected more especially with all the great actors it has in it.

I didn't watch any television shows on the web and actually have never tried that. I need to check that out one day. All of the television that I logged was watch from the comfort of my living room. My kids were in and out of the living room, but no one was interested enough to actually watch my shows. One thing that I did do, was pause a lot, go and do a task, and then go back to my show. This helped so that I could fast forward through some commercials, which is my pet peeve to have to sit and watch them.

This was an interesting assignment. I thought it was going to be nice for a change to be "forced" to sit an actually watch show for a change. I rarely get the opportunity to do so. I usually live by my DVR. I record and watch later, omitting all unwanted and time consuming commercials. Surprisingly, this was not as fun as I thought it was going to be. I have come to realize how much I appreciate my DVR and the ability to not be a slave to programming and it's time constraints. I don't like to have to be on a time line and it felt as though this had time constraints. I also like to flip around during commercials and sometimes when I do that I may find something else to watch. I felt restricted and did not allow myself to do that. I felt as though the television watching really was for an assignment and not for enjoyment. I think that journals such as these are not a very reliable source for keeping track of peoples viewing habits. This is definetely the case for myself. If people have to actually log what they watch they may alter there habits so that they may not have to write down every little thing they actually do, or they may not actually write it down. It is not the truest and most accurate form of what the viewers are watching. I believe that an electronic devise attached directly to the television set is the best way to get an accurate picture. Viewers have too short attention spans, I know I do, and tend to wander off, and channel surf.

TV Viewing:

Wednesday 11.05.08
8:30pm to 3:30am

I can remember I time when I would come home from school and watch hours on end of television, absolutely frustrated when my mother made me get up and clean something or interrupted my precious relaxation time—because life is so hard in middle school. I suppose the most significant alteration to my viewing habits happened when I graduated high school and moved out from under my parent’s roof and didn’t have cable for a year, as well as other periods hence. Ever since I suppose, television just doesn’t interest me. There are plenty of shows I have, or I’d love to become engrossed in—i.e. Lost, Dawson’s Creek, One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, Grey’s Anatomy, Family Guy, Gilmore Girls, Desperate Housewives—and these particular shows I either own the box set, DVR them, or rent them online; and watch them at my own convenience without pesky commercials. Generally, the only television I watch on an actually TV at its specific broadcast time is Nick at Night, really late—usually Fresh Prince and Roseanne—when I’m having trouble sleeping at night; and even then when the first commercial comes on I usually turn my back to the TV and fall asleep. It’s horrible when I get to bed so late that Nick at Night has become Nick Junior. I watched Stylista on the CW and The Island Reunion on MTV for the first time. Only watched about fifteen minutes—wasn’t that interesting. I actually had to force myself to watch things the entire fifteen minutes. I did however, watch some stand-up on Comedy Central by Bill Maher that was absolutely hilarious, glad I caught that one. So inso-facto, this was very atypical from my normal viewing (or lack thereof) habits.

Specifically today, all the TV I watched was at my house on an actually TV, at its regular broadcast time, and by myself. But often I watch football games on Saturday and Sunday at a restaurant with a group of people. Or with my best friend at her house, and then it’s her daughter that chooses to watch eighteen consecutive episodes of Dora the Explorer. Like I said before, I frequently watch a series on box set. I watched all fours seasons of Lost for the first time over the summer and I don’t think I slept for a month just because I couldn’t stop watching long enough. And, I do occasionally watch a series by streaming them online, usually Ugly Betty or Desperate House Wives from the station’s website.

I most definitely had trouble watching a single show for fifteen minutes at a time. I think it had a lot to do with the fact that I just have basic cable so I don’t have the option to scroll through the guide and see what else is on without changing the channel—and heaven forbid I miss something on another channel. And I despise commercials. I’m not sure if I trust the accuracy of the Nielsen Journal as a method to record particular viewing trends. I hypothesize that when people get the chance to view in a list the crap that they choose to watch on TV, they might be tempted to alter the legitimacy of their journal. For instance, if I noticed I watched five hours of Dancing With the Stars and the Real World, I might be tempted to say that I watched some news and Discovery Channel in there somewhere, when realistically I did not. Or particular shows that people might not actually want to admit to watching—sex talk shows or woman’s basketball. I think the things we choose to watch, to a certain extent, reflects the type of person we are—or possibly just how much free time we have on our hands—and some people might not be comfortable with the realization that they don’t even know what channel the History Channel is on.

T.V. time

Katie McDonough, Wednesday November 6
I really don't watch that much t.v. on a regular basis, because of school and work. But this was not a typical day because I actually scheduled time to watch t.v. today. Today was defiantly more t.v. than I usually watch. The only time I really watch more than an hour of t.v. is on Sundays whenever football games are on. Im not a regular viewer of any shows, but I really enjoy watching John and Kate plus eight and what not to wear. I did watch the king of queens, which I never watch, but did because of this assignment. The only thing that I did miss that I wish I cold have watched more of was the Texas and Tech game on Saturday night. I don't record shows to watch at a later time. I don't really have time to, and I don't have tivo.

I didn't watch any t.v. shows that were on hulu.com or nbc.com. I didn't watch any t.v. at friends house whenever I was recording my t.v. watching time. I did watch 27 dresses on this afternoon. My mom was watching the movie with me. I was watching the football game with alot of friends, and I was watching John and Kate plus eight and what not to wear by myself today.

I kinda like that process of writing down what I watch. In high school, I probably would have filled up all the time slots between four o clock and eleven, but its interesting to see how little t.v. I watch because of how busy school keeps me. I didn't change channels at all. I watch alot less t.v. than I thought i did. I knew that I didn't watch alot, but I didn;t realize that t.v. wasn't a huge part of my life until I did this assignment. I think that if people are honest about how long they are watching t.v., I think that journaling like this could be very beneficial for keeping tack of ratings.

This day was a very non-typical day because I actually only watch TV one day out of the week and that is usually on Thursdays. However, it was election night so for about 5 hours my eyes were glued to CNN.

During this time there were about seven other people watching TV with me, all friends. Which is also not typical because usually during the week I tend to be somewhat of a loner.

I was not surprised at all by this process of logging my TV viewing habits, because I rarely watch TV. If anything I watch my own DVDs, but during the week I am way too busy usually to do either. I think journals like this are not too reliable because people can write in wrong information or forget to write in information, thus, making it inaccurate.

Monica Tame - November 5, 2008

My current schedule keeps me from the usual amount of TV I watch. I would definitely say my viewing habits have decreased quite a bit. I was able to watch some of my regular favorites like, The New Adventures of Old Christine and Chelsea Lately. Though I have watched Oprah many times, I would not say I'm a "regular" viewer of the show, however I made it a point to see it because she was going to host a "post election" special. The media made sure to show her in the audience during President Obama's acceptance speech, and I became interested. I usually watch Lipstick Jungle, but it did not air. I'm assuming the long-dragged election was the reason. Thursday is my favorite TV day, because all my favorites come on. I set a recording this day for NBC's Thursday night comedies; The Office, 30 Rock (my favorite) , etc, because I am gone when they come on and I DO NOT want to miss them.
I usually never watch any shows on my computer. Everything I watch, I watch in the comfort of my own home on my big 65" Mitisibushi high definition television (personal preference). Because I record everything I cannot watch and save the episodes I love, I do not own any shows on dvd. Normally my husband and kids watch some of the shows w/ me, but right now our schedules conflict. However, my husband and I watched New Adventures of Old Christine and Chelsea Lately together.
I enjoyed the experience of the Nielsen Journal. It's amazing how they can somewhat keep up with that stuff. It's not 100% reliable, but they do get a general idea of who's watching what. I think it's a great way to gives us more of what we like. I did not see a difference in my viewing habits, because I made it a point to keep things normal. I change channels when I do not want to watch something, but I'm not a major flicker. Usually I try to record all the shows I like, because I've became a commercial-hater. I blame it on DVR...lost my patience. I did watch a lot less TV, but like I stated earlier that's due to my hectic schedule. Currently I have shows that I recorded on my DVR that I have not watched. like Gary Unmarried & Jimmy Kimmel Live.

So usually, I am not a very big Television viewer. But I do have one TV show that I generally will put my whole life on hold for. That would be dun dun dun THE OFFICE. It comes on every Thursday at 8 pm, unless NBC thinks something better should be aired. Recently I have been watching another tv show. Due to the elections being in process SNL would air Week updates. This came on right after the office, it was SNL's spin on the elections process. On November 4th I watched more Tv them I generally watch because it was election day. I watched CNN all the way up until they announced our new Presidential candidate and he made his acceptance speech. This is something I think everyone should had watched because it was history. If i do have to miss the office i am lucky enough to be able to find it on Hulu or NBC online airs it as well. I can watch old episodes or funny clips that they have put together.

As I explained earlier I have watched Hulu.com and Nbc.com If I have missed the Office. I also have watched tv online to watch Sex and the city episodes as well. I really enjoy how we have this set up for us to watch, it makes things alot better. For election day I watched the updates at a campaign party for one of the candidates.

I think the process of having to write down your tv viewing is to keep tabs on what is watched the most and why. I only would change the channels when a commercial would come on, but I would quickly go back to my Tv show in order not to miss a thing. I really dont watch that much tv, because I dont sit down and scan through the channels. Its usually because I dont know what’s on, someone introduced me into the office. I think if i was introduced into more tv shows I would have more favorite shows. I think that by having journals like this we are able to be introduced to what people are age with similar interest like to watch. It can help broaden our interest in the televisions world.

The day I logged my TV activity was not really reflective of my typical viewing habits. In terms of the amount of TV watched, there wasn't much change, but what I watched and when I watched it was quite different.

Most days, I watch television during the afternoon or early evening. I usually tune in to the Game Show Network around 2pm to catch episodes of Family Feud, Lingo, and Chain Reaction. (Gmae shows keep my mid sharp). Sometimes, I'll turn to NBC at 3 o'clock if the channel guide mentions an appearance by a celebrity I like on Ellen. Between 5 and 7, the TV is turned to Noggin, a Nickelodeon channel for young kids, so my babies can watch...but they aren't really paying much attention. The last show I watch each day is the Colbert Report at 7:30 on Comedy Central, which I try to never miss.

On the day that I logged, everything was out of whack. I didn't come home until 7:30 and, to my disgust, my husband was watching The Mummy Returns on FX. I watched with him for about 30 minutes, then sugested we change the channel because I dislike movies like that. Nothing appealing was on, so we tuned in to House of Payne on TBS to see if it had gotten any better since the last time I watched-it hadn't. George Lopez, South Park, and Chocolate News were good at making me laugh for an hour and a half.

Around 10, when I'm usually in bed, we watched a recorded episode of Vh1's Real Chance at Love, which we record each week so that we never miss. It airs past my bedtime, so I usually catch it on the weekends. That's part of my shameful, trashy TV secret because it's a reality dating show that is a spinoff of a spinoff (I Love NY, Flavor of Love). We fast-forwarded through the commercials and paused a lot, so we watched in about 50 minutes rather than an hour. The last ten minutes of my night were spent watching a rerun of The Colbert Report until 11:00pm.

I wish I could have watched my regular game shows on GSN, but it doesn't bother me that I missed them because they air every day, even weekends.

Since I had such a busy day before I started watching TV, I didn't get the opportunity to watch any internet TV or anything at any bars or restuarants. Besides my husband, my kids and my brother-in-law were present when I looged the shows, but no one was really watching except my husband and I.

It was interesting to log what I watched because I did find that everything didn't fit nicely into 15 minute increments, especially when something is on the DVR and I skip the commercials. I was well aware before this experiment how much TV I watched so there were no surprises there. As far as reliability goes, I don't think this is the most reliable way to monitor TV show viewers because my logging didn't happen on a typical day, and there's no way to tell if one's day will be typical. It's a hit or miss system.

- Monday was no different than any other day that I watch TV. My viewing habits usually consist of watching television shows that I have recorded using my DVR the day before. Usually I'll watch two or three shows that I have recorded and maybe a show that is currently on live TV. I rarely miss The Hills. It has become a ritual at my house (I have 4 other roommates that are girls) to be home at 9pm on Monday nights so that we can watch the episode from the week before and then watch the following premiere episode. But since I had missed the episode the week before, I was able to use the DVR to watch both shows back-to-back. I rarely ever pick up shows I haven't seen before, so Monday afternoon was the regular mix of shows that I watch. I had missed The Hills from a week ago and had missed Desperate Housewives and Army Wives from the Sunday before. I have pre-recorded all "my" shows so that if something comes up, I can simply rely on the DVR to record the show so that I can watch it on another day.

-I did not watch any television shows on any other source than my TV. Without my DVR though, I know for certain that the internet would be my source of catching shows that I had missed. ABC and Lifetime do a good job with posting the new full-episode immediantly after the show has aired. My roommate Courtney showed up around 2:30, just in time to watch the end of Desperate Housewives with me.

-Logging my TV use was probably the easiest assignment to date. I, oddly, make time to watch TV almost everyday even though I have a huge workload. I think it's pretty regular that I can get in about three hours of television a day. Almost every night there is a show that I watch; therefore, either that night or the following day I can count on watching at least two hours of television. I can usually squeeze in an old episode of "Project Runway" or "Made" in the middle of the day as well. I'm not exactly sure of the effectiveness of the Nielsen journal or other television journals. I'm assuming it allows stations to see at what times and shows the public is watching. I believe it depends on the loyalty of the people writing the journals; that they log their TV use accordingly. If the journal loggers are truthful in their entries than the journals serve their purpose and are more effective.

My Viewing Habits

Enjoli Claire
November 4, 2008

This day was not typical at all of my weekly viewing habits. I hardly ever watch TV, and when I do, it's definitely not in the morning, during the day, or late at night. IF I ever get to watch TV, it's in the evening, and I catch a glimpse of the evening news or sit down with my mom for a few minutes and watch Dancing with the Stars. I'm not a regular viewer of any shows, but in the summer, when I have more time to watch TV, one of the shows I like to watch is Seinfeld, and I got to watch that on this day. I would love to watch The Office regularly, but I have band practice on Thursday nights, so my only option is to watch the episodes online, but even then, I really don't have time, so I've only seen the first episode of this season. Everything that I watched, I've watched before. I didn't miss any shows that I wish I could've watched, because, like I said, the only show I desire to watch is The Office. I didn't record any shows on this day to watch on another day because, again, I only look forward to watching The Office.

I didn't watch any TV shows on a website on this day, although that is my only way to watch The Office. I didn't watch any TV at a friend's house, at a restaurant, or on a DVD. My sister and I watched Decision '08 to see Barack Obama's acceptance speech, but that was the only time that anyone watched TV with me.

I didn't really like the process of having to write down my TV viewing, because at every commercial break, my habit is to channel surf and find something interesting to watch while waiting for the commercials to pass, so I felt like I didn't have the liberty to change the channel. I knew coming into this project that I would have to force myself to sit down and watch TV, which is not something I was looking forward to, because watching TV is absolutely not a priority to me, and more a waste of time than anything else, except, of course, when I watch The Office. Therefore, I knew before this that I watch very little TV, so it wasn't a surprise to find how hard it was for me to sit down and watch it. I think that the reliability of journals like this for keeping track of what people actually watch is not very reliable at all if the people using it are in the habit of channel-surfing randomly and during commercial breaks. If, however, the people that use a journal like this watch a show for at least 15 minutes and never change the channel, then I think it can be effective, informative, and useful for Nielsen. Furthermore, in my opinion, it depends on the individual's viewing habits to conclude whether or not the journal will be able to find out what it's meant to find out.

Yannis Koutroupis TV Viewing

Yannis Koutroupis 11/2

In terms of my daily viewing habits, Sunday is different from any other day because football is on. Throughout the course of the week I’ll watch a handful of television shows like George Lopez, Family Guy, The Shield, and the Real World/Road Rules challenge. On Sunday though all those programs are put to the side in order to watch football, unless there is a break in the action like from 6-7 pm when we watched tivoed episodes of Family Guy. Every Sunday a group of buddies of mine get together and bar b q and watch the games. This has become a tradition throughout the years, so nothing was missed on Sunday. The only show unrelated to football that was watched was entourage, and it comes on later at night when most of the action is done.

The only time that something is watched away from the TV is when someone will log on NFL.com to catch highlights of a game that we weren’t watching. There is typically 5-6 games going on at a time early in the afternoon, so after the conclusion of the main game we were focusing on we check out what happened in some of the other ones. It is typically a big group of guys that do this every Sunday, at my friends apartment downtown.

I felt that writing down my TV viewing on this day in particular was not too difficult, because it’s a day where we just watch one thing at a time and focus on that. Sometimes we will flip flop between two different games, but because the two games that were on in the afternoon were so good we stayed with just the two of those throughout. That made the logging process awfully easy. Sundays are my day off, and I spend most of them relaxing in front of the TV, so it was no surprise to me how much was actually watched. I think that these journals are a very good way of being able to track what people watch, although I think that some people who frequently change channels and hop between several things may not fill it out completely accurately due to the work that is required. Some people are just lazy, and would probably leave things out. I know after several hours of watching and logging my TV viewing I would start to omit things I didn’t watch for very long.

Javier G.'s TV blog post

Javier Garcia 10/5

1. Tonight I started off with the Daily Show and half of the Colbert Report. After that I went home and caught the Simpsons, followed by ABC News, and finally followed by South Park. This ends up being a mixed night of television for me, I usually have to watch the Daily Show and Colbert Report on the internet because I don’t have cable. Also I usually don’t catch the Simpsons, but I watched it today because I knew ABC News was coming on afterwards. I occasionally watch ABC News at the late timeslot, but television news doesn’t provide me enough meat, so I don’t care too much if I miss it. I was eager to see it tonight though, because I wanted to bask a little longer in Barack Obama’s victory from last night. And I almost always catch the full block of South Park on Fox at midnight, it makes up for not paying for cable and missing out on Comedy Central. The only shows I missed out on were the late night showings of Law and Order and CSI Miami. I am somewhat a fan of those shows, but I don’t think I am as hardcore as some people. I don’t know what nights or what time they come on, I just know that they are on ABC and CBS. But I am fanatic enough to put off my homework to watch the two full episodes of Law and Order, and then immediately switch to CSI the moment that the credits roll on L&O(David Caruso is comically intense on the show). I got hooked on crime shows because I randomly caught one episode of NYPD Blue where Jimmy Smits was roughing up some skinheads and fighting prejudice, I was hooked on the genre after that. MATT SANTOS 4 PREZ!

2. Tonight was an unusual night because I saw the Daily Show and the Colbert Report over at my friend’s place, usually I have to watch it off of the Daily Show’s website. When I am over at my friend’s house we usually don’t have the TV on, we only make an exception for John Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

3. I think the process of recording my viewing habits was easy. I am not the type to change the channel when the commercials come on, I just turn down the volume, or else I will get wrapped up in another show and miss crucial scenes from my original show. I was a little surprised at having watched almost three hours of television, I would have thought my number would be lower. But I console myself with the fact that I am horribly inconsistent with my habits. I will watch the shows I mentioned if I turn the TV on, but I often forget to turn it on because I know I don’t pay for cable and it doesn’t enter my mind that I have shows that I am loyal to. I also use the bunny ears on my TV, which acts as another deterrent to watching it, sometimes I just don’t have the patience to adjust the ears. Overall, I think the journal is effective and reliable because there is a slight level of anonymity to it. People don’t have to worry about being judged in their social group for overloading on TV because only Nielsen will know their habits. Difficulty recording the shows watched wasn’t difficult for me because I had limited options and didn’t change the channel. But I can see how someone who constantly changes the channel might easily forget to record a lot of shows they watched.

Tonight was pretty typical of the television i watch. I get home from work at about 11 and turn on the tv. On Wednesdays its usually South Park and as of late Chocolate News, which is pretty funny but mostly mediocre. After that is the Daily Show and the Colbert Report which I usually watch at their first reruns. I tend to watch these two shows every night at this time. After those shows I usually flip around or look up the Time-Warner schedule online to see whats on. I watched a Bill Maher special for a while, but changed to E! when Chelsea Lately came on. That show is great. Then, when E! was taken over by paid programming, I flipped around a little bit and ended up at Sex with Mom and Dad on MTV... ridiculous, but entertaining. I got tired of that and went back to Comedy Central to catch the end of Dennis Miller's standup. Basically, this night is pretty typical, as I usually stay on Comedy Central and change between a few other stations. By the way, I think I have that commercial for Extenze memorized. Anybody who watches Comedy Central after 10 knows what I'm talking about...

I work at a restaurant and mostly in the bar. I usually have one of the televisions on CNN. I was watching it almost all night because business was pretty slow. The whole time it was on, the headline was "Breaking News: Obama Wins", which is funny because it had happened about 24 hours before. I have never seen more footage of Oprah Winfrey than I have today. Because I work during prime-time tv hours, I catch a lot of shows online. I usually visit hulu.com or download episodes via torrent sites. I didn't use the internet to watch any shows today though.

I found it pretty easy to log my tv viewing. I tend to watch full episodes more than flip through channels. I would watch the show, then log it. I wasn't surprised by the amount of tv I watch. I know I watch a lot of tv, but seeing 4 hours straight logged on paper made me think of the more "constructive" things I could do with my time. But whatever, I enjoyed it. I feel that this method of keeping track of tv viewing it pretty reliable, but reading other people's entries made me think that it might not be. I guess a lot of people flip through channels a lot more than I do and don't really pay much attention to what they watch. I think it really changes from viewer to viewer.

BrittanyDe86's Blog #4: Tuesday, November 6, 2008

This was not a typical day for me. I rarely watch TV but because it was a historic election day I ended up watching over 6 hours of CNN! That is easily more TV than I watch in a month. The only show I follow regularly and do not miss is American Idol but it does not start again until January.

In addition, I also watched three episodes of SNL's Weekend Update Thursday's on NBC.com. I had already seen them during previous weeks but felt like laughing at Tina Fey again. My boyfriend and his father were in and out of the room through-out the day but were not glued to the TV like it I was.

Keeping track of my viewing was not a big deal sense I didn't change channels. The fact that I had to watch TV was a little weird because I never do so I don't even know channel numbers. Also, when I do watch TV it is usually for a reason so I know what channel to go to. I watch a lot of DVDs, but am not the type to turn on the TV because I'm bored and just flip through the channels. My boyfriend and best friends are the type to have the TV on for no reason and constantly change channels. Based on that, I could see where journal keeping for TV viewers could be an issue.

This was not one of my typical TV watching days.  On a regular basis, I watch TV on Sundays and Mondays.  I watch True Blood on Sunday nights and Gossip Girl on Monday nights.  I never miss these shows and often watch them at their regular times and with a friend recorded on a DVR.  Since I found out about the blog after my regular shows had aired, I was forced to watch a night of TV that I don't usually watch.  I used to watch America's Next Top Model, so I figured that I would tune into the CW for its new season.  I also had an interest in the show Stylistas which aired after ANTM.  I probably will not watch these shows again, as I did not find them to be interesting.  Other than that,  I watched Las Vegas when I woke up because my TV was already tuned into TNT from viewing their late night programing from the night before.  As far as late night TV is concerned, I typically watch Without A Trace and Cold Case on TNT but last night they were playing Lethal Weapon movies so I did not tune in.  This left me watching the end of Saturday Night Live and Chelsea Lately.  The only show out of those that I typically watch is Chelsea Lately, but that is only when nothing else is on.  Also, it should be known that I leave my TV on 24/7.

I also watched some TV today that was online.  I went to the CW website and watched full episodes of Privileged.  I watched two episodes from around 9:15 PM to about 12:30 AM when I tuned into Sex and the City on the CW on TV.  I did not watch TV with any friends today, nor did anyone else watch my TV.  Other TVs in my house were tuned into FOX News and then eventually my mom watched Dancing With the Stars.  She, however, turns off her TV when she does not use it.

I found the process of writing down my TV viewing to be quite interesting.  I never realized how much TV I actually watch.  However, I am not a channel surfer.  Since I have Direct TV, I find it too much trouble to search through all the channels and usually just settle on one thing regardless of how entertaining it is.  I would say that these journals would be pretty accurate for keeping track of what people watch as long as they were truthful in their report.  For instance, I think that some people would be embarrassed to record some of the shows they watched or would record that they watched more interesting programs to sound more educated or cool.

- This was a fairly typical day for me in terms of how much TV I watched. I usually sit down and watch whatever's on in between classes or before or after work. I don't really have any shows that i watch regularly. I sometimes try to watch The Office whenever it's on, so I was pretty excited when I stumbled upon it while flipping channels. The only thing I watched that I had never seen before was E!'s 25 Acts of Love Gone Wrong, but E! is always showing some new show that is the top whatever random things. I didn't really miss anything that I wanted to watch because I don't really have any shows that I look forward to every week. On this particular night, I was pretty much trying to avoid anything that had something to do with the election because I was sick of it.

- The only TV that I watched that wasn't logged was about an hour of Adult Swim that I watched with my boyfriend at his house. I usually don't go out of my way to watch shows online or anything. If a TV is there, I'll watch it, but if not, who cares. There are TVs on where I work, but they have to stay on sports channels, and I usually don't get a chance to watch them unless it's super slow that day. Most of the time when I'm watching TV at home, my roommate, Megan, is watching it with me, unless she has to work that night.

-Writing down all the TV I watched was pretty annoying, I'm not going to lie. For me, leaving it on one channel for at least 15 minutes was rather painstaking. I pretty much have TV ADD, so usually as soon as a commercial comes on, the channel gets changed. I do feel like i watch a lot of television, and on the day that I logged I probably watched even less than usual. ((I had a paper due the next day, so I didn't get to watch my late night shows.)) I just like having the TV on, even if I'm doing something else, especially when I'm home alone. I really don't think that these journals are very reliable, simply because it changed the way I watched TV for the one day I had to do it. I don't think that the average family leaves the TV on one channel for extended period of time unless it isn't being watched. People don't usually sit down to watch TV and think to themselves, "Okay, i have to write all of what I watch down and I have to leave it on this channel until at least 3:15..." People's minds don't work that way. When they get bored of it, they change it. Also, if people know that someone else is going to know what they watched, they might watch something other than what they usually would, or they might lie all together for fear of how it might make them look. Like me, for example, I almost didn't want to put that I had watched Full House on my paper, but oh well, I was bored and I watched it, who cares?

November 4, 2008 (Election Day)

3. Typically television is not a huge part of my daily schedule, and for the purpose of this blog I tried to watch a little more than usual. One of the only shows I watch on a regular basis is SportsCenter, of which I will watch the same episode 2 or 3 times if I get the chance. Also, I watched a medical comedy/drama called "House". I had seen this show almost half a year before and really liked it, so when I saw it on USA I sat down and watched it, I might even try adding this into my routine when I get the chance because the show matched the sort of comedy that I like to see. I did miss the coverage of the election by Stephen Colbert and John Stewart because everyone at my house is not fan of the duo and we had to keep the channel stuck on CBS and the "boring" coverage. I did not record any shows because of my lack of the ability to do so but I do wish I had recorded Colbert and Stewart.

4. I did not watch any tv shows online but I did indeed watch a movie at a friends house after the election proceedings were over. A group of us got together and watched Iron Man and The Hulk and had a heated debate about which movie we liked more.(Iron Man)

5. Personally I felt that I changed my tv habits to fit that of the survey, I might have changed channels more if I had not been being monitored. I knew that I was watching more tv than I normally did but I did not realize even so that I had still spent so much time in front of the tv, I guess I really was drawn in by the shows. I could definitely see people writing what they think the survey wants them to put down or putting shows they wish they'd watched and were fans of. I would maybe use this as a guide line for whats being watched on tv, it seems to be reliable for the most part but I could see the results being skewed and would not bet my life on any results of this survey.
