The Secret Life of Bees

Deeadra Piper, Hillary Reyna, Shelby Reilly, Liz Perez

The Secret Life of Bees, which premiered on 10/17/08 is a drama based on the 2002 New York Times best-selling novel of the same title by Sue Monk Kidd.  The film grabbed the #3 spot at the box office behind Max Payne and Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

While the basis on the book is noted by both the trailer and the poster, the main emphasis or selling point is the "all-star cast" of the film.  Starring in this movie are Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson, Academy Award nominees Queen Latifah and Sophie Okonedo, eleven time Grammy winner Alicia Keys, and beloved child star Dakota Fanning.

The genre of Bees is a mix of intense and heartwarming dramas with the classic love story intertwined.  Because of this, the target audience could be anyone who likes serious drama, but the cast of the film along with the romance may attract mostly female viewers.

The trailer gives us a lot more insight on the actual storyline-a significant difference from the poster, which only shows a picture of the cast that hints toward separate lives that come together for a common cause.  There was only one version of each.

At the official site for Bees, the trailer is played against a backdrop of the main residence in the film.  After the trailer ends, viewers have the options to look at photos (including recent ones from the L.A. and D.C. premieres); read cast information; download buddy icons, wallpapers, and bookmarks; watch video clips; get recipes from The Secret Life of Bees Cookbook (that will be available for purchase soon), and even get a Facebook application that allows you to send gifts from the movie to your friends.  Since the site belongs to Fox Searchlight Pictures, there are links to other films being released by the same company.

One piece of extra information found on the film was an interview of Kidd, the original author, by the Dallas Morning News.  She was interviewed one day after the film's release and although skeptical at first, she is thoroughly satisfied with the turnout of the finished product.  Upon finding out that her novel would be put on film, Kidd was asked who her lead character should be and she instantly named Queen Latifah.  Another interesting thing is that Dakota Fanning had been a fan of the book for the last four years and, upon hearing that it would become a film, she wrote to Kidd and begged to be given the role.

Another cool thing is a spread in the November 2008 issue of Sophisticate's Black Hair magazine that concentrates  on the hairstyles of the African-American women of Bees and how they came to be.  I was especially grateful for this article, which stopped me from screaming, "Oh my God!  Alicia Keys cut her hair!" (It's a wig).

There are supposedly pirated copies of the movie online.  The first attempt at finding one was with fulldls.com, a site that claimed to have a copy.  After downloading and leeching the torrent file with Transmission, the finished product wasn't readable or watchable.  The next attempt was from Extra Torrent, but the download never began after a whole day of waiting.  There are some people online who claim to have gotten a copy of the film, but we weren't so fortunate.

All in all, we're pretty much sold on the cast, storyline, and the overall feel of the movie and think that it would be a great film to go and see.

This movie seems like a really good movie. I think its that type of movie that keeps you thinking about it long after you leave the theatres. The whole storyline, I think, is during the 1950s-60s and its really interesting how this little girl is amazed by the African American family which during that time African Americans were considered unequal to society. I would probably wait to see it out on DVD.
